DMR, or Digital Mobile Radio, is a digital voice and data standard originally developed for commercial communications but now widely used in amateur radio. It offers clear audio, efficient spectrum use, and the ability to carry both voice and data at the same time. DMR uses a system of talkgroups, color codes, and time slots to organize communications. Many hams connect their DMR radios to global networks like BrandMeister, TGIF, or DMR-MARC, enabling worldwide contacts with a handheld or mobile radio. DMR repeaters and personal hotspots make it possible to operate almost anywhere with internet access.
